The Hyaku Monogatari Clan (百物語組; Literally meaning "Hundred Stories Clan") is a yōkai group whose main source of fear is not through direct haunting (Kyoto Yōkai) or Land Gods (Nura Clan), but through "collecting", "telling", and "creating" haunting tales about the supernatural, which helps generate and propagate fear among humans. The Nishikigoi District was once under their control.
History[]
It and the Nura Clan were the two clan associations for yōkai and other supernatural beings in Edo. During that era, they greatly increased their influence through creating tales. The clan began as a means for the then-human Sanmoto Gorōzaemon to obtain power and "fear". Through the tradition of the "hundred stories" and the Hyakki Teakettle, he used fear to gather and control both yōkai and humans alike. The creatures created as a result of the hundred stories were made into his underlings, but they were all relatively weak compared to standard yōkai.
The group was frequently at odds with the Nura Clan under Rihan's leadership, and were eventually crushed by the Nura Clan's forces approximately a hundred years ago. The clan as it exists in the present came about when a desperate Sanmoto used himself as a catalyst for the hundredth tale. As a result, his body split into 100 parts which each became a separate yōkai. Currently, the clan is encroaching on the Nura Clan's territory and working to revive Sanmoto's main body, which resides in hell.
