Kyōkotsu is a Kyoto yōkai who appears as a young girl. Her father fought alongside Hagoromo Gitsune 400 years ago, and she is said to be even more capable than he was. She carries a skull with her at all times, and a countless number of snakes pour forth from it. Her fear involves these snakes devouring the eyes of her opponent.

Summary[]

She first appears at the sixth Kyōto barrier of Ryūen-ji, where she quickly (and brutally) kills Gōra Keikain, allowing Hagoromo Gitsune to destroy another of Hidemoto's seals. She later manages to wound Nurarihyon when he infiltrates the Nuega-Ike.

When the Nue is resurrected and orders the Kyoto Yōkai to follow him to hell, Kyōkotsu is one of the few who remains behind, as her loyalty lies with Hagoromo Gitsune. After the Nue leaves, she seems to assume temporary leadership of the Kyoto yōkai. Rikuo additionally returns Hagoromo Gitsune's host body to her and allows her and the remaining Kyoto yōkai to leave peacefully.

Kyōkotsu along with the other Kyoto Yōkai protected Kyoto when the Gokadoin House attacked. She was reunited with Hagoromo Gitsune and later on, she protected Hagoromo when Seimei tried to attack her, resulting in her getting injured greatly on the right side of her face. In the last chapter, Kyōkotsu was seen with Hagoromo Gitsune, looking at the Nura Clan from afar.

Relationships[]

Hagoromo Gitsune: She views Hagoromo Gitsune as an older sister of sorts and is devotedly loyal to her. Kyōkotsu follows her wherever she goes and abides by her wishes, regardless of what they may be. Her loyalty is such that she doesn't recognize Seimei as the Kyoto yōkai's leader and believes that Hagoromo Gitsune will someday return to the host body she left behind. When she was finally reunited again with Hagoromo, she tearfully hugs Hagoromo. Her loyalty to Hagoromo Gitsune was so big that she shielded Hagoromo against Seimei's attack and it resulted in her getting injured.

Trivia[]

In the anime she is heard a few times to be singing a song.  It is a song that teaches the streets of Kyoto that run east-west, making it easier to remember them and features most of the streets between Marutamachi Street facing the Imperial Palace of Kyoto, and Kujo Street facing the Toji Temple[1]:

Maru take ebisu ni oshi oike
Ane san rokkaku tako nishiki
Shi aya but-taka matsu man gojō
Setta chara-chara uonotana
Rokujō hitchō tōrisugi
Hatchō koereba tōji-michi
Kujō-ōji de todomesassu
