History[]

Four hundred years ago, Nattō Kozō was part of Nurarihyon's Hyakki Yakō and took part in the battle against Hagoromo Gitsune's forces. While Rikuo was growing up, he and Tōfu Kozō frequently helped set up and execute the former's pranks against other members of the Nura household. He was also among the yōkai who accompanied Rikuo during the Gagoze incident.

Gyūki Arc[]

Prior to the Kiyojūji Paranormal Investigation Squad visiting Rikuo's house, Nattō Kozō is seen drunkenly distributing sake among the partying yōkai. In the anime, he trails Rikuo when the latter follows an errand rat yōkai of the Kyūso Clan and remains behind after Rikuo has returned home. As a result, he knows before the rest of the Nura household that Kyūso doesn't intend to keep his word. After the Kyūso Clan has been dealt with, Nattō Kozō is among the yōkai who tend to Rikuo's fever by transporting towels and washcloths. He later appears (in the anime only) among the yōkai at Bakenekoya when Rikuo brings Kana there on her birthday.

Shikoku Arc[]

During the Nura Clan board meeting to discuss Gyūki's actions, Nattō Kozō fretfully paces the hallway outside the board room along with Tsurara and Kubinashi until all three are reassured by Rikuo's mother. He accompanies Nurarihyon when the latter sneaks out of the Nura House, goes shopping, and ultimately runs into Yura. During the subsequent battle against Muchi, Nattō Kozō remains hidden in Nurarihyon's shopping bag. He then travels with Nurarihyon to Shikoku, where he torments Mamedanuki with the pungent smell of nattō. He returns to Tokyo on an express train with Nurarihyon and Inugamigyōbu Danuki.

Kyoto Arc[]

As one of the yōkai who travels with Rikuo to Kyoto, he spends much of the ride snacking and drinking sake with Ko-oni, Sannokuchi and Te no Me.

Quotes[]

  • "I may stink, but I'm still a yōkai!"

Trivia[]

  • In Kiyotsugu's "yōkai poker" game, the Nattō Kozō card is worth the least amount of points.
  • He ranked 43rd in the character popularity poll with 61 votes, tied with Mamiru Keikain.
  • In the manga's chapter 56, when the Nura Clan's yōkai come to Rikuo's aid, Nattō Kozō appears beside Rikuo, wearing the jacket that was given by Karasu Tengu. In the anime, however, he is not wearing the jacket.
  • He is Nurarihyon's first follower because he saved Natto- Kozo's life by pouring water on him to prevent him from being dried natto.
